To the left of the plate goes your napkin (or you can put the napkin on the plate, put a beautiful napkin holder around it, or do something decorative with the napkin. Folding napkins is a class itself :0)
The largest/dinner fork size should be placed on the napkin (if it is placed there), or just directly to the left of the plate, and then place the other forks to the left of that. To the right of the plate place the knife (s) and then the spoon (s).
The utensil that your guests will be using first are placed farthest out. To illustrate, the salad fork goes to the left of the dinner size fork and the appetizer fork goes to the left of the salad fork. The same holds true for the knives and spoons depending on how many courses will be served. You want your guest to use the utensil to the farthest right or farthest left as the courses are served.
