New Rules for Your Life and Your Business Podcast
Episode #30 with Nancy Greene

Meet Nancy Greene

Nancy Greene, Esquire has been working with businesses for the last eighteen years and helping ensure that those businesses can weather owner disputes and legal challenges. She educates her clients about the legal mistakes that have the potential to destroy their business. A member of the National Association of Professional Women and a NAPW Woman of the Year 2012/2013, Nancy loves working with other women business owners and helping them navigate the every stormy waters of running a business in today’s litigious society. Opening her own law practice in 2013, Nancy understands what it takes to run a business.

Repeatedly told that she’s “not your typical lawyer,” Nancy takes all that fancy legal mumbo-jumbo and demystifies it. Business and our economy thrive when empowered business owners are given the tools they need to understand and navigate the legal issues and challenges that face their business.

When Nancy isn’t practicing law, she’s spending time on her horse farm with her husband and two teenage boys, and writing romantic fiction under the pen name “Nancy DiMauro.” She’s also participating in an upcoming Ewomen Network Non-Fiction Book with Sandra Yancey: Succeeding Through Doubt, Fear & Crisis, which is scheduled to be released in August 2014.

Nancy will be speaking on legal issues for your business at the No Glass Ceiling Conference in October, 2014 in Las Vegas.

NEW RULE; the Big Idea/ Strategy to help with this new world we live in:

Success isn’t about reacting. It’s about preparing for the worst in advance and when you get knocked down, and you will, getting up again.

Why it’s important; benefits both personally and professionally:

“The new rule helps make the impossible seem only improbable. Seriously, if you’ve taken the time to assess and plan for risks you can step out into the new world with confidence. That confidence attracts people and good things to you. Also, when you’ve done the best you can to prepare for the worst you know deep down that you can survive whatever happens.”

How to accomplish the above:

“Still learning that. From a business standpoint it means spending the time and money to make sure you have a sound and holistic strategy that meets your business needs and your ethics/ beliefs. We all excel at our little slice in life. But there’s a whole big pie out there. Form relationships with people who can help fill the gaps you have. I hate messing with accounting and filing. I can do it but I grit my teeth and delay as long as I can. So, I spend the money to have someone else do it for me. Happier for me.

Same in my personal life. I’m crafty so there are a lot of things I can do around the house. Lots of them I enjoy too. But I just hired a landscaper because I didn’t have the time to invest. Time, money, these things are tools to help us be the person we’re supposed to be. Use the tools that are out there.”

Favorite Quote:

“If you really want to do something, no one can stop you, but if you really don’t want to do something, no one can help you.” – James Artimus Owens, Drawing Out the Dragons.

What do you do to stay motivated or the secret for your motivation:

“I remember what I really want and reorient my actions and purpose to achieve it. Some days though – it’s Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food Ice cream.”

I encourage people to take time for themselves each and every day. One of the ways to relax is to read a good book. A Fiction Book. What is your Favorite Book:

“Wow. Favorite? Still probably, the Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.”

Golden Nuggets:

  • Best time to have a relationship with an attorney is before any problem starts.
  • Cost is much less if you protect yourself up front, than if you wait until you are faced with a lawsuit.  Think of it as an Insurance policy for your business.
  • If she does her job right – you’ll never know what she saved you.
  • When you have all your documents in one place it gives you the confidence to have everything.  Gives you a Professional Presence – as a real company. Have the ability to pitch much higher than you normally would have. Ability to walk into a Corporate Client and do business.
  • Need forms customized to you and your business.
  • Review agreements and Update agreements – Case Law Changes and Current Case Law needs to be looked at.   KEEP CURRENT and update every 3-5 years at least.  If your state changes more rapidly, your attorney will advise you how often to review these documents.

Action Steps:

Be sure you have all your Legal ducks in a row for your business.

Actionable Steps:

1. Assess your business

2. Do you have the documents you need to protect it?

Partnership, employees, clients, vendor

3. If not, invest the hour or two of legal fees in your business to see if you need these documents.

4. If your documents are over 3 years old, it’s worth having them (especially the employment ones) looked at again to ensure they still comply with the law. The Law changes. It’s a living beast. Don’t let it swallow your business.
